In 2004, Google was already the dominant way people found things on the internet. Search had won. But there was a problem: nobody had built the tooling layer yet. There was no way to know if you were appearing in search results, no way to see what queries brought people to your site, no diagnostic tool that told you why you were invisible.

Then came Google Search Console. Then Moz. Then Ahrefs. The tooling layer followed the platform by a few years — and when it arrived, it built a multi-billion dollar industry on top of the simple question: "Am I visible? And if not, why?"

We are living through that same moment again.

AI is the new search layer. The tooling doesn't exist yet.

ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Grok, Perplexity. Five major AI engines are now handling a significant and growing share of product discovery queries. Shoppers ask AI which tool to use. Buyers ask AI which service to hire. Researchers ask AI which product to consider. The AI recommends one answer — or a short list — and the conversation ends there.

The conversion rate when an AI recommends you by name is extraordinary. You are not competing with nine other results on a page. You are the answer, or you are not mentioned at all.

2004
Google dominated search
No Search Console. No rank tracking. No backlink tools. Businesses were flying blind in the biggest discovery channel of the era.
VS
2026
AI dominates discovery
No AI console. No mention tracking. No prescription tools. Most products are flying blind in the fastest-growing discovery channel right now.

The gap is real and it's wide. Enterprise GEO tools exist — they start at $500 per month and target Fortune 500 marketing teams. For everyone else — every indie builder, every SaaS founder, every marketing agency, every D2C brand — there is nothing.

No console that tells you "GPT mentioned your product 12 times this week." No dashboard that shows your trend over time. No tool that says "here's exactly why you're invisible in Gemini and what to fix first."

Google stack vs AI stack — what exists today

We built the first layer

We did not set out to build a mega-platform. We set out to answer one question: "Do the major AI engines know about our product?" We couldn't find a tool to answer it. So we built one.

pickedby.ai is the AI equivalent of Google Search Console — for your product, your brand, or anything you want AI to recommend. You enter a domain, we probe five AI engines, and we return a score from 0 to 100 with a breakdown across four dimensions: how well AI recognizes you directly, how you rank in your category, whether you appear as a co-recommendation alongside established products, and your underlying web authority signal.

That's Phase 1. Phase 2 — which is also live now — goes further.

Why this matters more in 2026 than in 2004

When Google emerged as dominant, the path from invisible to visible was a years-long SEO campaign. Content, backlinks, domain authority — everything compounded slowly. The tooling lagged by years, but the optimization window also stayed open for years.

AI discovery is moving faster. Training data cutoffs, model updates, crawl pattern changes — the landscape shifts on a timescale of months, not years. The businesses that establish AI visibility now, when most of their competitors haven't even checked their score, will have a structural advantage that is hard to replicate later.

Early movers in SEO built businesses that still rank today because of decisions made in 2005–2008. We think the same dynamic is playing out right now with AI visibility — just compressed. The window exists. It will not stay open as long.

Our score went from 12 to 45 in roughly three weeks — just by understanding which specific gaps to fix and in what order. Not a content strategy. Not a paid campaign. Just the right prescriptions, executed in priority order.

The wedge, not the ceiling

We're starting with indie SaaS builders, marketing agencies, and consultants — the segment that has no enterprise budget and moves fastest on new tools. From there, the vision is simple: anyone discoverable by AI should have a tool that tells them what AI actually thinks of them.

Every product. Every service. Every personal brand. Every local business. Sooner or later, AI is going to be the primary way the people they want to reach will find them. We are building the instrument that tells you where you stand — and exactly what to do about it.

The AI Search Console doesn't exist yet. We're building it. You can use what's live right now for free.
